Define

Defining the words we use is extremely important. We talk about so many things, but many times we don’t even know what we are talking about. In this viral video about hating religion and loving Jesus one major error is he doesn’t know what religion means. He starts from an erroneous idea of what religion is. Google “religion definition” and this is what comes up:

Noun:

  1. The belief in and worship of a superhuman controlling power, esp. a personal God or gods.
  2. Details of belief as taught or discussed.
    There are other definitions, but they generally all contain a set of beliefs and the worship of a higher being. Jesus did not come to abolish beliefs and worship. He came to fulfill the law (Matt 5:17). And if worship can be defined as an expression of adoration or honor then he taught us to do that every time we pray, “hallowed be your name” (Matt 6:9). There are other issues in the video, but his use of the word religion is awful. We all need to be more careful.
